The Gate House Testimonials

Thank you very much for such an enjoyable stay. I was so thrilled to see around Wolterton and huge congratulations for creating such a splendidly grand and comfortable house. It is such a pleasure to stay at the Gate House, which you have made so lovely. Thank you for having us and getting it ready for our arrival.

It is such a pleasure to stay at the Gate House, which you have made so lovely. Thank you for having us and getting it ready for our arrival.
-(August 2021)

Our family, 2 adult, 2 teenagers and a baby, had a wonderful 2 weeks holiday in the Gate house. The Gate house itself is beautifully appointed. We really love how it has been renovated, especially the spacious bathrooms and cosy sitting room. We enjoyed the welcome hamper which included a lovely cake and delicious granola. Despite the mixed weather, we made good use of the barbecue. Outside the house, we liked going on walks around the walled garden and lake. The jetty was completed just as we arrived and we had a good time paddling the canoe on the lake. I was also fortunate to go horse riding on the estate with Phillida, who has a farm nearby. Chris gave us a tour of the main hall, and it was fantastic seeing how beautifully they have restored the house. Thank you so much to Chris, Jason and all the Wolterton team for your hospitality and kindness during our stay. We can’t wait until we can come again!

“We had such a wonderful stay in the Garden House. Everything was done to such a high standard and the grounds are simply stunning. You feel immediately relaxed and at one with nature when you are walking around the estate. We loved the tour of the house as well, so much history. We did the best Easter Egg hunt my daughters have ever done around the gardens. We went to Holkham, Snettisham, Cromer, Holt, Burnham Market and Wells-on-Sea. We did crabbing, deer feeding, seal watching and so much more. What a magical week. Thank you for being so welcoming. We will be back, I’m sure.”

We enjoyed two meals at the Saracens Head and at the Walpole Arms - we would recommend the Walpole Arms more but both were great. Our favourite beach was Holkham (so sandy and picturesque!). We also visited Holt Country Park. Our favourite tea room was Hatty’s House Tea Room in Holt as it was very small and cute. “We have had a wonderful, relaxing week at Wolterton. The Garden House is an absolute delight! Thank you to Chris for your welcome, help and the fascinating tour of the ‘big house’; and to Peter and Keith for sharing this wonderful place and its journey of renovation. The welcome pack was lovely and much appreciated, as were all the ‘little’ touches; flowers from the garden, logs for a cosy open fire and bikes to explore the estate! We will certainly look forward to returning. Thank you for everything.”
(September 2019)

“We have loved staying in this house. Very comfortable and well equipped. But it was the little touches - and big ones too - that really made it so special. From the flowers and perfect welcome pack, to the chance to walk around the lake and much improved grounds, to the generosity of Chris’ tour. The house was really outstanding and awe inspiring. We wholeheartedly wish you all the very best in your worthwhile project to rescue Wolterton - it’s looking amazing already. The Walpole Arms and Itteringham village shop both great as always.”
-The Wheelers (September 2019)

Our second tay at Wolterton and the Garden House has more than lived up to our expectations - very comfortable, luxurious, even if the weather outside was not quite what we would have hoped for in late May! The fire and generous provision of logs was most welcome.

-Francesca, John and Fennel, Northumberland. (June 2021)

Thank you for a lovely, relaxing stay in wonderful surroundings. I will miss breakfast in the walled garden. Best wishes.
-The Moriarty Family.(June 2021)

Its love! You may find me hiding in an outbuilding scuttling out to tend the walled garden at night! I booked what I thought was a lovely holiday home not realising till I get here that it was somewhere I had read about the restoration project years before! We did manage to drag ourselves away for some touristy bits - boat hire from Potter Heigham a quite part of Wroxham, Felbrigg & Blickling, beautiful gardens though not as evocative an the ones here. Spent hours wandering around the grounds/walled garden and cycling down the quiet country lanes with all the surrounding wildlife. Our teenagers highlight of the holiday was the Clay pigeon shooting organised here. Very sad to leave. Thanks for sharing this lovely place.
-Hargreeves Family, Shropshire. (July 2021)

The most restful week; thank you. Recommended - Alysham shopping, Salle church, Heydon Village, the walk to Blickling & back, spending lots of time by the lake & walled garden.

How many kindnesses have our dear hosts extended in this English country garden. We’ll tell you now of some that you’ll know, those we miss you’ll surely pardon. The house so beautifully presented and generously appointed making it not so much as a home from home, but a haven from home to which we will return!
-The Tobin family (September 2021)

“Three families - ten kids, three dogs, for three days. This place was absolutely fantastic. Luxurious but so peaceful and welcoming. We made cracking food in your fabulous kitchen and had our first meal of 2020 as a 16 strong team in your gorgeous dining room. Beds were so comfortable, showers powerful and all the furnishings so tasteful. We walked to the Walpole Arms with all three children and dogs and were wowed by the scenery. We’d love to come back in the Spring/Summer!”
-The Ackermans, Sladers and Liddles, New Years 2019 - 2020

“What a location! From the moment we arrived it was clear that his is a very special place. Steeped in ancient English countryside, we were immediately transported back to 18th century life with beautiful vegetable gardens to serve the house, vistas of woods, fields and a lake, a mile-long driveway taking the house far away from any sounds of modern life.

The East Wing provides more than adequate accommodation for three families to spread into without feeling any compromise on space. The antiquity shouldn't mask how the inside of the house was perfectly equipped with cooking tools, entertainment, WiFi throughout and original artwork that made walking down the halls a pleasure. Our beds were all utterly luxurious to lie in and the double beds being particularly capacious for less mature families. If joining as a large party, make sure you get there first to be the envy of the group to nab the largest and grandest of the double rooms in the tower, far away from the noise of the house. Our evenings were spent around the large and charismatic dinner table in the kitchen that is older than America, wondering at what has been eaten, drunk and spoken about on and around it since the 1400's. Cue kitchen envy all around. The outside allowed for lazy afternoon in the sun, eating a a dining table under the trees. A truly magical place to escape to. We hope to be back soon.”
-
The Kelsey family (September 2020)

The well equipped kitchen has been a pleasure to prepare meals in. We have had some trips out to Cromer, Sheringham and Holt but otherwise have not felt the need to leave the park with so many lovely walks. We have enjoyed walking around the walled garden, round the lake and through the wood. Daisy dog has quickly learned her way around and has enjoyed hours of ball throwing. We have been made super welcome here and our welcome hamper was delightful and the vegetable basket absolutely delicious! We will return home more rested and relaxed than we have for months! We are very likely to return for more of the same! This truly is a rural retreat! Thank you!”

“Wolterton Park and The Treasury, what better self catering stay? As Horace Walpole said in 1742, ‘I was really charmed by Wolterton; It is all wood and water’!Thanks to Peter and Keith for showing and sharing their home and letting us see some of the detailed renovations in progress. Many thanks to Chris and the very friendly staff, especially for the welcome hamper! We love the area - normally staying at Felbrigg. “What a coup! Finding somewhere to stay which is both relaxing and in such a beautiful part of the country. It has been sometime since we stayed in Norfolk but has brought back many happy memories. Staying in The Treasury within the park has given us three nights of peace and quiet, but has also enabled us to enjoy the countryside. What a bonus to find we are staying at a time during Norfolk restaurant week! Thank you to Chris for giving us a tour of the hall, which was very much appreciated and we really hope everything goes according to plan. Esme, our dog, has enjoyed the walks, the private garden and her time on holkham beach. Fascinated by all the wildlife. Thank you to the staff we have met and look forward to coming again! Echoing our predecessors who have stayed here, we have enjoyed the whole experience very much. The tour of the Hall and seeing all the work achieved and in progress was very interesting. Chris made us very welcome. The walk round the lake, lovely. Wolterton Hall is a beautiful building and home. So good that it is being restored to its former glory. We have been very comfortable in the Treasury.
-Michelle and Michael, Cornwall. (September 2021)

Thank you to all of the team at Wolterton Hall. - about as such reinvigoration as we could get anywhere in three days. The Walpole Arms and Itteringham combined excellent tapas with local beer - highly recommend.

We really enjoyed your informative tour of Wolterton Hall. The grounds surrounding the house are perfect for a picturesque walk, especially around the lake.

Some of our favorite outtings included; lunch at the Walpole Arms, Blickling Hall, Holkham Hall and Holkham Beach. Thank you for your hospitality and kindness during our stay at Wolterton, we hope to see you again. It would have been even better if we could have stayed for another week!”

We’d love to visit again and use the boats on the lake! Thanks again and see you soon.”

We will definitely return the next time we are lucky enough to be in Norfolk. Thank you!”

What a beautiful place and how wonderful you have been able to bring it back to former glory and to find a way that would never have been possible In Jane Austen’s day. Very much enjoyed swimming in the lake, though in fewer clothes then.
- Kim catcheside, Holberts party (September 2021)

Yet another joyous stay at Wolterton. Thank you to our hosts once more. The fuel crisis let us to do walking boots for most of our time here and explore the immediate environment. There can’t be many places in the UK with so many great estates and houses within walking distance of each other, and life takes on a slower pace without the need of the car. Just hope we have enough fuel to get home again. Looking forward immensely to our next visit.
- Linda and Julian. (September 2021)

What a truly luxurious experience its been staying here. The beds and showers were to die for and we managed to make good use of the very well equipped kitchen and courtyard. A great spot to explore and as a base to discover the very attractive towns along the coast of North Norfolk. Will def be recommending to friends and family and hope to return one day.
